For this year, I'm going to try participating in a few things to help nurture and maintain habits related to writing and creative practice. We'll see how they feel!

[community profile] cultivativity | Welcome & FAQ post
This is a space for cultivating creativity.

This is not set up as a challenge, as that implies competition or accountability to produce something (which are fun activities, and for which there are several other communities available). Rather, this community is organized as a series of modules designed to help build a practice to nurture our creative selves. Do the things you want, ignore the ones that don't.

[community profile] getyourwordsout | Pledges & Requirements for 2026 Participation
I've never signed up to GYWO before! I decided to try a Habit Pledge. I chose The Excursionist level, which is writing for 180 days over the year (approx 15 days/month). This feels ambitious but not impossible to me, and I think working towards building a habit of regular writing will be more fruitful for me than monitoring my wordcounts.

I'm also going to try doing Fannish 50 again! "Make fifty posts about topics related to fandom. You may set any theme(s) you wish, or pick random topics for each post." The info & sign-up post for 2026 is here.

I wrote for True Detective: Night Country this year and kind of just sunk myself into this world for a couple of months. Did a bunch of research on polar night, only to have to acknowledge that the show just hand-waved whatever it wanted so I followed suit. I love these characters so much that I had an absolute blast writing this.

Snowflake Challenge 2026 Day 3

Challenge #3

Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

Today's prompt felt somewhat familiar, so I poked through my old entries and saw that I'd answered an iteration of it in 2018. The vibe of that 2018 entry is very "I didn't have the energy to write anything, but I still wanted to complete today's challenge so here's this half-baked response that's unintentionally prickly." I don't know whether to laugh or just ... sigh deeply.

That wasn't a great year for me, mentally.

I'm not really sure what I want to write for this prompt. Finding my 2018 post threw me into a melancholy mood and that's not really what I want to talk about right now. But at the same time, I couldn't really think of a topic/focus even before I started feeling down.

For now, I think I'll settle for a declaration of war of continuing devotion. (That's romantic a la love letters, right?)

At this point in time, I've spent more than half my life in fandom, being various levels of fannish through various mediums. I can't see myself ever stopping being in fandom, I can't see myself ever stopping being a fan of something. It's not an exaggeration that I can't imagine being a "normie." I want to one day be that old fandom lady that the Youths write about on whatever future version they have of a fandom platform, I want to be known as that one old lady who's keeping her ancient fandom alive by posting a fic every so often for it.

I entered fandom in the early 2000s because I wanted to and I'll exit it whenever I want to. And I don't want to exit fandom.

Pets! We know them, we probably have positive associations with at least one type of pet, and they've appeared in our creative endeavors since time immemorial. Considering that, we felt that a challenge revolving around them would be appropriate.

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

Okay, so I'm going about this one in two parts.

First, some sharing of historic Real Cat Fiction. This was my way of cheering myself up back in 2020-21 - I basically hated lockdown (for context to anyone who doesn't know me that well or at all, my family is pretty much scattered across the UK and I didn't end up seeing them for over a year even in the times when there was some loosening of restrictions). If you're in the UK you will be well aware of the various political scandals at the time (and even if you're not in the UK you probably picked up some of it). So this is basically Larry the Cat (and the other Whitehall felines Gladstone and Palmerston) getting the better of the government.

https://archiveofourown.org/users/creatureofhobbit/works?fandom_id=295954

(I've only linked to my own fics here, although more Larry the Cat does exist - I'll spare you the horror that is Boris Johnson getting pegged by Liz Truss.)

And for something new create for the challenge, here's a fic about Gretchen from Dark (a poodle who is sent through time from 1953 to 1986 and reunited with her original owners in the future):

Nothing here made any sense to Gretchen.

When Helge had thrown the stick into the caves for her, it had seemed just like any other time when he, or Claudia, or Egon or Doris, would have done so; Gretchen would find it, bring it back to whoever had thrown it, and that was what she thought would happen this time. But now she doesn’t recognise the house she’s been brought back to, and she’s confused by the people she’s with – the middle aged woman and the older man smell like Claudia and Egon, they sound like them, and Gretchen even thinks she can see the people she knew in their older faces now. But she still finds herself looking for the eleven year old Claudia, cannot understand why Doris Tiedemann no longer seems to be living in the family home, and is still getting used to this other person, the one called Regina (and her friend Aleksander who is often around), who seems to live here now but isn’t someone Gretchen remembers from before.

She’s seen Helge Doppler, too, (although is relieved not to have encountered his scary mother, Greta, so far; Greta always scowled if she ever caught sight of Gretchen) and wondered if he remembers her, if he can still remember throwing that stick that had led to Gretchen travelling forward in time. He still smells the same, too, although he too has changed physically; he has injuries to his face which Gretchen doesn’t remember him ever having had before. If she could speak the same language as him, Gretchen would be asking him right now whether he had known when he threw that stick that it would lead to her ending up in 1986; he probably didn’t, since it was the scent of her owner, Claudia, that Gretchen had followed, rather than Helge himself (but again, the woman who had opened that door for Gretchen looked different, older still even than the Claudia who is living here now and who seems to have no idea what had happened.) She’s seen that other friend of Claudia’s, Tronte, too; since he had only just arrived in Winden in 1953 she hadn’t spent that much time with him, but enough to be able to tell that this older man is the same boy who had just moved in with them.

Sometimes Gretchen wishes she had just turned around and gone back the way she had come, just dropped the stick at Helge’s feet and then waited for Claudia and Tronte to come back; at least that way she would be living the life she knew. And people would know her, too; since she isn’t able to communicate to the Tiedemanns that she’s still the same Gretchen who belonged to the family in 1953, they’re talking as though she’s a different dog altogether, calling her Gretchen because she looks just like the dog they used to know. If she could at least explain, maybe someone could help her get back to the Tiedemann family and home that she was familiar with; instead she’s left trying to navigate this new time, this family that are her own and yet not the family she knew.

I just finished SPY×FAMILY S01 recently and started watching S02. Before starting the series, I already knew about the different members of the Forger family via fandom osmosis but what I didn't know was how horrible Bond's backstory is 🙃 I literally started to tear up when they showed us a flashback of what Bond went through before he even ended up with the terrorist group we saw him with at the start. I also, for some reason, almost started crying when he and Anya fought because he got jealous of her penguin plushie.

I'm so happy that this big boi was adopted by the Forger family and is now living his best life. Excited to see more of him in S02! In conclusion, please enjoy this compilation video of Bond's borfs from S01:

To me, the issue is not so much about the validity of music criticism—it’s that as both consumers and music fans, we have increasingly little space to criticize publicly without that critique being conflated with an attack on an artist’s identity or worldview.

The article is mostly about music criticism, but the discussion can be applied to any form of media.

In my personal experience, I was also significantly touchier about anyone criticizing my beloved media (even when it was obviously in good faith or just a discussion on personal preferences) when my mental health wasn't at its best.

Personal rating 8/10

A reimagining of Batman where Bruce is Yohualli Coatl, the son of a noble Aztec family in 16th-century Mesoamerica. The movie blends history with fiction, with Hernán Cortés (Two-Face) and the Spanish conquistadors standing as the story's main villains. Members of Batman's rogues gallery make appearances as well, their backstories tweaked to suit the setting.

I was going to watch this no matter what—a Batman movie where he's a character of color fighting against conquistadors??—and I'm happy to report that I had a great time! Right out the gate we have Toltecatzin (Thomas Wayne) side-eyeing Cortés for calling Mexico "the new world," saying that "Many suns have already passed since our people first knew these lands." Amazing.

Cut for length and spoilers. )

Random stuff:

  • I didn't do a liveblog, but I did post some screenshots on Bluesky.
  • I think this would've benefited from being a mini-series instead of a movie. I don't mind timeskips, but I think the story needed just a bit more breathing room. The Yohualli/Mujer Jaguar angle especially. They're cute and I ship it! But I would've liked more development.

Well, pretty much nothing has changed from my original introduction post, so that's here:

Fandom wise, my three all time ultimate favourites are Lost, Dark and From, followed very closely by Yellowjackets and School Spirits, then Fringe, The Wilds, The Way Home, Doctor Who, The Hunger Games. Older favourites include Vampire Diaries-verse, Pretty Little Liars-verse, Once Upon a Time-verse, Arrowverse, Game of Thrones-verse, Supernatural. Riley Sager and John Marrs are my favourite authors.

Hoping to get the chance to discuss fandom and get to meet more people, also to cheer up the usual gloomy January.

Goodbye 2025, it's been a year.

It's been the year I finally went to Japan (2½ weeks in october, it was lovely, but damn, I hate long planerides.)

It's been the year when I saw the Crazy Christmas Cabaret for the very last time. They'll be missed. Now, to find a new december tradition. Also, I am considering whether it might be fun to go to London next december to see a panto, for comparison purposes.

It's been a year of twice having periods of no clean water (I'm grateful for my tiny prepping box with bottled water) and twice my stupid cat got bacterial UTIs (I still suspect the second round was a deliberate plot to get me to once again give her liquid snacks twice a day).

It's been quite possibly the least amount of writing I've managed in a year. Just two tiny drabbles, a Murderbot ficlet and a Mysterious Lotus Casebook three sentence fic.

It's been a year of reading 177 books and comics according to Goodreads. My favourites, in no particular order, were the manga The Apothecary Diaries (Maomao is a delight); Joakim Garff's Solisterne (a historical novel of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard going on vacation together); Robert Jackson Bennett's The Tainted Cup & A Drop of Corruption (murder mystery fantasy said in a biopunk universe with kaijus);  Martin Wangsgaard Jürgensen's Drømmenes pris (a biography of Lovecraft and analysis of his writings); and listening to the audiobooks of Pratchett's Witch novels - now that was pure nostalgia. Wyrd Sisters was the second full novel I ever read in English. Yeah, especially the early ones have flaws that are more obvious now, but - <3.

It's been a year of watching 24 movies and series. My two absolute favourites were animated: Flow (which finally came to Danish cinemas) and Kpop Demon Hunters.

Movies and tv shows watched in 2025 )

It's been a year. And now it's 2026 and we'll see how that goes. No new year's resolutions. I do want to try to write more (I'd say sign up for exchanges to get that deadline pressure, but I got so disappointed the last few times). Oh, and come spring I need to find a driving instructor to give me some routine lessons.

Challenge #1: The Icebreaker Challenge

Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Hi, I'm Bear! I'm a 30-something Filipina (she/her), who's been active in fandom since the 2000s. I've been reading and writing fanfic since I started being fannish, and I have a couple of ancient fanarts squirreled away on my computer. My intro post has a bit more information on where else you can find me on the internet.

I've participated in the [community profile] snowflake_challenge for the last few years though I skipped it in 2025. Considering the new wave of users that recently joined Dreamwidth, I thought the challenge would be a good way to reach out, meet new people, and hopefully make new friends!

Thanks for dropping by 👋🏽

I signed up for [community profile] rarefemslashexchange! Very happy with my assignment, currently enjoying canon review. :D

I'm thinking of signing up for [personal profile] candyheartsex, too! Is anyone else planning to do this one? Only 300 word minimum! I try not to have too many simultaneous open exchange assignments for myself, but this feels within reach. :D

Buuuuut also [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles will be running a round in January-February. I love drabbles, so this is tempting too! But three assignments (even ones with short minimums!) seems like it would be overwhelming, so I might stick to treating for this one.

Finally, [community profile] fandomtrees is seeking help creating gifts (2 for each recipient) before reveals, which are currently scheduled for Jan 10. If you're inclined to check it out, there's a handy spreadsheet of needy trees linked at this post!

Are there other exchanges, bingos, or similar challenges you're participating in that are coming up soon?

I'm kind of blown away at the lovely reception my fic got this year - more than I ever expected in terms of comments and kudos, and several very kind recs. Today's the first day of the [community profile] snowflake_challenge! Thinking ahead to next year. I've signed up to GYWO of course.
The Fannish 50 is running again but I didn't go great with it previously. I might pick it up again on my terms.

[personal profile] smallhobbit has come up with 26 photos for the year which a lovely way to record the year and post regularly and in this post has an impressive list of courses completed. I've checked out the free courses and identified a couple of Open University ones that looked interesting. My new job has a subscription to National College and are keen for me to do some sort of Continuing Professional Development next year, so at some point I guess I'm be learning something in a structured way :)

I would like to finish the 100 prompts LiveJournal table, started a lifetime ago. And make in-roads on the 100 fandoms. I might ask for help with encouragement/brainstorming for the LJ table. And of course more crafting. Nephew loved the sheep bauble I made for his grandparents that he wants one for his March birthday so that's on the list.

Best wishes as we approach 2026!
